Would you BUY or PASS? Star by Theresa Oliver #Vampire #Action #FridayFiveChallenge

Welcome to the ‘Friday Five Challenge.’

Would you BUY or PASS if you had only a thumbnail image and five minutes to decide?

Welcome to the #FridayFiveChallenge.  The original idea comes from Rosie Amber, and you can join up at https://rosieamber.wordpress.com

The rules are laid out at the end of this post if you fancy having a go.

Here is my contribution for this week:

I recently re-watched a sci-fi series that I loved when I was in my twenties and so used this as inspiration for my Friday Five search.  I typed ‘Stars’ into the search bar and after scrolling past many Star Wars books I found this:

Star (C.I.A Vampire Series Book 1) by Theresa Oliver

Blurb:

Abigail Starland, better known as Star, is a kick-ass C.I.A. agent. But what’s different about her is that she’s a shape-shifter vampire—from the Revolutionary War era—in a covert new branch of the agency. According to the CIA, she doesn’t exist. She fears nothing, that is, until she’s assigned as bodyguard to Zachary Davis, the eighteen-year-old son of her boss. When they fall in love, the trouble begins. She soon discovers that The Others—rogue, uncontrollable vampires—are after him. But who’s behind it? Will Star be able to save Zac from her past, or will her past finally be the death of her?

My Analysis:

Cover – I had a fleeting moment of ‘wonder if it’s erotica’ when I spotted the cover, but the title soon pointed me toward an alternative (and favourite) genre.  I like the black and red colour scheme that can be found in many vampire novels; it’s like a comfort blanket for vamp fans.

The book blurb – Short and sweet but gives me enough information to intrigue.  I like the story idea and expect it to be quite an action-packed novel with a secondary romantic story arc running through it.

The Stats – The Kindle price is £2.02.  There are no reviews on Amazon.co.uk yet, but ten reviews on Amazon.com, the majority are five stars.

Here is an example of a five-star review from Amazon.com:

This book is an action filled, vampire romance, told from the point of view of a vampire. The vampire qualities follow quite closely to other current vampire books, so it’s easy to feel akin to them. I love the deep emotions felt in this book, and the great friendships that are depicted. There is plenty of action in this book, which makes the book flow nicely, and makes it difficult to put down. I look forward to more books with this cast of lovable characters!

BUY or PASS? – It’s not a ‘change the world’ kind of book, or even a new take on an old classic, but as a fan of vampire books I think this could be quite an enjoyable read.  It’s a BUY from me.

What is the Friday Five Challenge?

In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions on small postage stamp size book covers (thumbnails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

The Challenge is this… IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES…

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description of this book,

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

(then write a little analysis about your decision)

  1. I think you are right the cover is giving off the wrong impression, nothing tells us Kiss-Ass vampires or if it’s perhaps #YA or #NA where most of the vampire readers hang out. Think I’ll pass.
