Here on the Reader Spot, I share the bookish love of our avid book reviewers. From young adult to historical romance, chick-lit to a murder mystery, they know what they like, and they’re happy to share.  Whether you are a reader looking for a new book, or a writer wondering what your reader wants, I hope you find this series enjoyable.

Next up to the Reader Spot is the very lovely, Renee Conoulty. Find her book review blog HERE.

What genre do you enjoy reading?

I’m a very eclectic reader. I’m drawn mostly to women’s fiction, chick lit and romance, but also enjoy the odd horror, reading middle grade fiction aloud to my kids, writing craft books, suspense and anything else if the cover grabs my eye.

Do you have a favourite author in this genre?

A favourite? As in one? How can you do this to me? Okay, I’ll try… If I cut it back to women’s fiction and count the author I’ve read the most of and loved them all, I’d have to pick Liane Moriarty.

How do you prefer to read your books?

I prefer to read with my ears. I love audiobooks and if I only have access to the ebook, I usually read it via a text to speech app on my phone. I also have a Kobo ereader and a small pile of paperbacks.

Where do you purchase your books?

The majority of my books I get via review requests from authors or NetGalley. I usually buy books from Audible, Amazon or Big W.

Where do you find out about the books you read?

I find out about lots of books before they’re published from NetGalley and various Facebook groups for authors and bloggers that I’m part of. Word of mouth plays a huge part in which books I buy.

Do you have a budget when buying books?  Do you stick to it if you do?

I’m on a pretty tight budget for books. I won a $50 Amazon voucher a while back, so that has made me a little more one-click happy.

Do you write a review when you’ve finished reading?  If so, where do you post this?

I write my reviews on Goodreads, then copy and paste them to my blog. If I remember, or an author asks me nicely, I’ll also cross post to Amazon and Kobo.

What do you look for in a book?

I prefer likeable characters if I’m going to hang out with them for several hours. If the main protagonist isn’t likeable, the plot needs to suck me in. I prefer plot driven commercial fiction over character study, slow moving literary fiction.

Where do you like to read?

With audiobooks, I like to read everywhere. I listen while I’m doing housework or driving to work. I listen while I watch the kids at the playground. I listen while I cook dinner. If I find some time to sit down and read with my eyes for a change, I like to curl up on the couch with a cuppa.

  1. I’ve seen Renee all over Twitter – Renee, if you haven’t already, you ought to say hi to @CathyRy, who is the audio book queen, I am sure you’d have much in common!

    1. Thanks for matchmaking 😊 I love social media introductions. My maiden name is Ryan, so I already feel like a Kindred Spirit with Cathy. I’ll go stallholders her on twitter 😉
