Here on the Reader Spot, I share the bookish love of our avid book reviewers. What genre do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading just about anything – mainly fiction, YA, fantasy, apocalyptic drama, time travel, historical fiction, crime thrillers (especially Scandinavian Noir lately) – if it can grab me in the first few pages then I’ll stick with it. One book I just couldn’t get into was the Life of Pi, although I did enjoy the movie years later. I rarely give up on a book but it does happen sometimes.

Do you have a favourite author in this genre?

Nope, I get runs on favourite authors like reading Justin Cronin’s The Passage trilogy or Sarah J Maas series then once I’ve finished I’ll move on. I like Liane Moriarty and have read most of her books. (I LOVE Sarah J Maas!)

How do you prefer to read your books?

I use my kindle app on the iPad mostly but it’s always good to read a real book, usually a paperback.  I’m in a book club so we get a new book from the library each month to read and that’s a good reminder of how real books feel.  I also get given books for gifts and it’s great to take a break from the screen, the iPad is so convenient when travelling though.

Where do you purchase your books?

I purchase my eBooks from Amazon usually and books from independents or chain book shops when I can get to them. Living in the country does make it a bit difficult at times although my favourite coffee shop in town does sell books now too. I’ve used online sites like Book depository a few times, especially if I’m sending books as gifts overseas.

Where do you find out about the books you read?

I make use of lots of different sources for books to read – talking to my book club ladies, my sister, my daughters, work colleagues, blogs, Amazon, Goodreads, magazines, articles – but mainly it’s word of mouth.

Do you have a budget when buying books?  Do you stick to it if you do?

No I don’t have a budget, I always have something waiting in the wings for me to read. I consider reading to be an essential of life.

Do you write a review when you’ve finished reading?  If so, where do you post this?

I have been keeping a list of all the books I read on my book page on my blog at www.debs-world.com it helps me to remember what I’ve read and what I thought about it. I’ve done this since 2014 so it’s a good resource for me. I am trying to get into being more consistent with Goodreads at the moment.  I love Shelley’s #FridayBookShare and am enjoying reading other bloggers. Thanks, Debbie 🙂

What do you look for in a book?

I look for all these things, characters, plot, suspense and a direction.  I love a good twist that I didn’t see coming.  I use reading as a form of escapism and get quite down when I’ve finished a great book or a series.  I feel like I’ve lost my best friend for a while.

Where do you like to read?

I will read anywhere, anytime that I can.  When the sun is out you can find me on a seat on the veranda soaking up the rays.  In winter I read in my glass house in the garden (I call it my cubby house or she-shed) or curled up on the lounge inside. I can read in the car but only if I’m reading an eBook, otherwise I get car sick. Planes and trains are very good places to read when I get the chance.  I love reading on holidays and weekends and can often lose great chunks of time when I finally come up for air and realise just how long I’ve been out of the real world..  I get very involved in the books that I’m reading and can get consumed.  My daughters are also avid readers, I’m pleased to say. My husband is more measured than I am but does enjoy a good book too. Reading is good for the soul.

What social media platforms are you active on?

I have my main blog at Deb’s World I’m on Facebook as Debs World Deb’s World | Facebook, I’m on Twitter at @Wonderwomandebz Instagram as debs__world (that’s two underscores) and Pinterest @wonderwomandebz but none of the others.  It’s hard enough keeping up with the social media I have and I don’t really use them properly anyway, especially Pinterest.  🙂
