Film Review
The Greatest Showman – 5*
What better way to kick off my New Year’s Eve than with a trip to the cinema. As soon as I spotted the trailer for The Greatest Showman, I knew it was a movie I needed to see. I love the theatre, I love musicals, and yep, I’m rather fond of Hugh Jackman too!
It kicks off with a fabulous show-stopping number before transporting you back in time to the life of a young P.T. Barnum. We follow him as he dreams of a better life, gets the girl of his dreams, and becomes the founder of show business in its unique form.
I didn’t read any of the ‘professional’ reviews for this film because nine times out of ten they disapprove of the cast, lighting, humour, and everything that makes a movie work. I go with my gut when watching a film and when it makes my foot tap, and the hairs on my arm stand on end then I know I’m enjoying myself.
The first thing I wanted to do after exiting the cinema was download the soundtrack – it’s brilliant! It was the hardest thing to stop myself from clapping and cheering after every song and dance scene. If they bring this back to the West End, I would be SO happy.
If you’re looking for a film to make you feel good, fill you with joy, and that’s perfect for all the family then I highly recommend The Greatest Showman.
Casting is perfect, and the Hugh Jackman/Zac Efron team works wonderfully. Rebecca Ferguson’s voice is stunning. Zendaya (from Disney’s Shake it Up), Michelle Williams (Dawson Creek), and Keala Settle were outstanding.
Was there anything I didn’t like? Only that it had to end. I’ll definitely be going back to see it again.
Film Blurb:
Inspired by the imagination of P. T. Barnum, The Greatest Showman is an original musical that celebrates the birth of show business & tells of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a spectacle that became a worldwide sensation.

Ha ha 😆 He’d be great on Strictly Come Dancing!! I’m a huge fan of musicals so it was a perfect choice for me.

That picture of Hugh Jackman on Strictly is just going to stay in my head, which is a good thing, obviously.

This sounds like one of the great, old-fashioned musicals of times gone by. (No wonder today’s audiences aren’t as appreciative as they should be.) I think I may have to break down and watch a movie again. And yes, Hugh Jackman would be one of the reasons, but it also sounds like a fun show. Great review. 🙂

I have not been able to stop listening to this soundtrack since I walked out of the cinema, it truly is a ‘feel good’ film.

I love musicals and I’m booked to see it as a birthday treat. It’s the only way I could get my partner to accompany me!

I’m sure your partner will love it as much as you do! I took my eldest son who is a bit ‘meh’ about musicals and he downloaded the soundtrack before we’d left the cinema ha ha

Our local radio station has been playing loads from it. I hope I don’t start singing along, that would be so unfair on the other patrons.

Haha, they are showing a sing-a-long version at a cinema near us at the end of February!!! 😁😁

It is filled with feels. The message of the movie has been properly delivered through the actors and of course, the amazing songs. Who would not remember “This Is Me” and “Rewrite the Stars”. After watching I had this feeling that I want to go back to the ticket counter and pay more cuz I don’t feel like I paid enough. Amazing amazing! #CelebrateBeingDifferent

I loved it, but more importantly, so did my partner. I say that because I have a habit of taking him to see ‘duff’ movies, and he just sits there squirming, vowing never again. Glad I made a good judgement call!
