#Cineworld Unlimited Update: Film reviews from Oct/Nov #Films

One of the best gifts I ever gave myself was to invest in a Cineworld Unlimited Card. I’m in my second year and use it at every available opportunity.

Going to the cinema is my favourite self-help tool when I’m in need of a break from reality. Escaping into a fictional world for a while calms my nerves, fills my creative well, and recharges my batteries. I often see films on my own if there is nobody around to accompany me, and I’m never the only solo cinemagoer in the room. In fact, at certain showings, the number of people watching on their own outnumber the couples and groups.

By visiting the cinema often, I make good use of my Unlimited membership. I’ve even been known to return and see a specific film four times!

Here’s what I’ve watched in October /November:

Venom 5*

Venom

A thrilling ride from start to finish. I’m not a huge fan of Tom Hardy (I know!), but I thought he was outstanding in this film. There was plenty of humour, action, and special effects to satisfy any Marvel fan.

Slaughterhouse Rulez 4*

I became a big fan of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost when they did Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). Slaughterhouse Rulez is another slapstick, gory, and hilarious edition to their repertoire. Set in a British boarding school that turns into a battleground when a host of horrors emerge from below the school, the film is packed with great characters, cringe worthy moments, and lots of laughs.

Bohemian Rhapsody 5*

Wow! Rami Malek is outstanding as Freddie Mercury and makes this role his own. For me, it was a fabulous trip down memory lane as the film starts with the Live Aid concert (when I was 14!) and comes full circle. A fabulous look at the life of a legend which was heart-warming and emotional (yep, I cried!) — fabulous film and not just for the brilliant music.

The Nutcracker 3*

My daughter dragged me along to see this as she is obsessed with Christmas films (I’m more like the Grinch!!). It was very dark for a kids’ film, and the mouse man was a bit terrifying, but on the whole, it was a pleasant film. The classic story brought to life with plenty of effects and colourful costumes.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 3*

What I love most about going to the cinema is the buzz of conversation as you walk out after seeing a film. Everyone is chatting about their favourite bits, or debating what will happen next if it’s a franchise, but when I went to see the second Fantastic Beasts film I wasn’t expecting to be following the crowds in stunned silence – and I mean EVERYONE! We all filed out with gobsmacked expressions.

The special effects were fabulous as you’d expect from the Harry Potter franchise, but there was so much going on that I lost the plot very early on. I caught a few snippets that linked to HP such as Voldemort’s snake being a girl who can morph (but will eventually become a snake all the time), but apart from that revelation, I can’t tell you what the hell was going on. Too busy, too confusing, too dark.

Eddie Redmayne was brilliant as Newt, and I liked Jude Law as Dumbledore, and Johnny Depp was amazing (ovbs!), but the storyline was far too complex.

I might watch it again to see if I can pick up any threads but I won’t be in a rush to do so. There were lots of loose threads left for the next film, but I’m not filled with the usual excitement of what’s to come.

I love watching movies alone too Shelley, which happens almost the majority of the times…..great list of movies you have seen already, I am yet to see the Freddie Mercury biopic…….now about the one I have seen and reviewed already, Fantastic Beasts Crimes of Grindelwald is fantastic indeed in every aspect. Yes, there are too many characters and the storyline seemed complex, but I think it was required in the setting up of the next episodes to come….ultimately it is quite clear that Grindelwald will be finally meeting his nemesis in Newt along with his mentor Dumbledore, so we will be waiting for the story slowly to go towards the final confrontation in the fifth episode of this five movie series…….I enjoyed it really on the big screen IMAX and the visuals and the effects are too good to be true…..hoping the next episode to be even more gorgeous :)…..

    1. I’d refrained from reading your review before I went so I wasn’t influenced lol. Incredibly complex and I wondered if they could have made a six film series so they didn’t need as much info!! Definitely not my favourite film although the effects were fabulous.

  7. So there’s me, clicking on to see if you think the same as me about lots of recent ones, only to see that we have totally different tastes!!!! Only interested in Bohemian Rhapsody out of these. I forgot you like YA and fantasy, ha ha!!!! Like… duh!

    On the other hand, Tom Hardy would make me watch anything…. there go those different tastes again!

    At least TWD crosses all barriers!!!

    1. Hahaha, I know what you mean. This is why I end up going to the cinema on my own – all my friends like romance and yukky stuff! Give me an epic fantasy, sword swashing, horror, or teen flick any day and I’m happy! Although I probably will go see the Grinch – and Toy Story 4!! 😉

  10. You’ve watched two movies I want to see: A Star Is Born because Bradley Cooper is so darn cute and I love Lady Gaga, and Bohemian Rhapsody because I was a Queen fan back in high school! Movies do provide a welcome change from pressure and reality!

  11. a Star is Born will be on the list; just seen Bohemian Rhapsody (and reviewed it) – loved it. Fantastic beasts last week and, rather like you, utterly discombobulating but still enjoyed it even if it’s a little simplistic despite the confusion. Felt a bit like a kind of Sub Raiders of the lost Arc ish vibe without the humour. You’ll have to have me stuffed and reanimated before i’ll go to the Nutcracker or Venom though Slaughterhouse should have been on my list and I’ve no idea why it hasn’t been. For that, Shelley you are a star…
