My Review:

What if your ideal book boyfriend could leap right off the page and land in your living room? Camilla Isley’s It Started With a Book explores this fabulous fantasy in a story that’s equal parts laugh-out-loud funny, swoon-worthy, and irresistible for romance readers. If you’ve ever daydreamed about trading the real world for a bookish romance (and let’s face it, who hasn’t?), then you’re in for a treat.

The story starts with Leigh hitting breaking point with the modern dating world after being ghosted by another Tinder dude. From there, she swears off dating, choosing to curl up with the only men who’ve never let her down – the hunky heroes of her favourite romance novels.

I’m all for not wasting time on reality when I can escape into a world filled with billionaires, cowboys, and happily-ever-afters!! Just saying!

Things take an unexpected turn when Leigh discovers an old second-hand book on her bookshelf that appears to be magical. One night, she dreams herself into the pages of the fictional town of Lakeville Hills, complete with sunsets, bourbon-sipping bad boys, and heroines straight out of a rom-com. Enter Killian St Clair, the billionaire cowboy and Leigh’s ideal romance hero.

Leigh’s nighttime escapes to Lakeville Hills are just what she needs to deal with the ups and downs of real life, but then one morning, Leigh wakes up to find that her book boyfriend has quite literally jumped off the page and into her apartment!

The rest of the book is fun and fast-paced. Watching Killian try to blend in with the everyday world is hilarious. From figuring out the coffee maker to understanding what “Netflix and chill” means, Killian is a fish out of water in the most charming, awkward, and adorable ways.

The author’s humour shines throughout the book. I laughed out loud more than once at Leigh’s quippy comebacks and Killian’s unintentional mishaps. And I loved the chemistry between the two characters.

Leigh is a heroine we can all root for. She’s smart, sassy, and a little broken. Her struggles with real-life dating and the comfort she finds in books resonated with my own desire to escape reality!

It Started With a Book is a clever concept and the perfect read for anyone wishing their favourite fictional hero was real. It’s easy to read, full of fun (and a bit of spice!), and leaves you with a smile that lingers long after you close the book.

If you’re looking for a funny and unashamedly romantic book, this one’s for you.
