Book Blurb:

Gloucestershire is a county rich in beauty, history and a high level of spiritual, mysterious and paranormal activity. With a profusion of haunted inns, castles, houses and landscape features, the presence of the past is absorbed into the fabric of places as diverse as the Neolithic burial chamber of Belas Knap Long Barrow, the prisons at Gloucester and Littledean and the twelfth-century Ancient Ram Inn at Wotton-under-Edge. Hauntings have been reported at Sudeley Castle, Chavenage House, St Briavels Castle, Woodchester Mansion and Owlpen Manor, and many report unsettling experiences at the abbeys in Gloucester and Tewkesbury, the villages of Prestbury and Arlingham, and in the Montpelier and Pittville areas of Cheltenham. In this book author S. C. Skillman visits eerie locations around Gloucestershire to unearth a selection of chilling tales about them and explores the strangeness of the hauntings of this fascinating county.

Paranormal Gloucestershire takes the reader into the world of ghosts and spirits in the county, following their footsteps into the unknown. These tales of haunted places, supernatural happenings and weird phenomena will delight the ghost hunters and fascinate and intrigue everybody who knows Gloucestershire.

My Review:

I’m a big fan of this author’s work and loved reading Paranormal Warwickshire, as well as her other titles. Paranormal Gloucestershire is the latest in this superb series.

As with all of SC Skillman’s books, they are packed with colourful illustrations which add depth to the stories the author shares. As a regular visitor to Cheltenham, I was delighted to learn more about this Regency spa town and to see the Everyman Theatre on Regent Street mentioned. I’ve enjoyed several shows here and never knew about the well-dressed ghost! I shall also add the Ivy Brasserie to my must-visit list, which is located in the Rotunda on Montpellier Street.

In the surrounding areas, the village of Prestbury sounds like my kind of place, with an abundance of mysterious tales from the noise of horses’ hooves to an old man in a tweed jacket sitting in The Plough Inn.

One spot that is definitely on my must-visit list is Sudeley Castle. Being a fan of Tudor history, it was fascinating to read more about Katherine Parr. Being the first woman to publish a book under her own name makes her a heroine in my eyes, and I’d love to visit this impressive castle to discover more.

Tewkesbury, Tetbury, and Nympsfield all feature in the book with equally fascinating tales. The author has a beautiful way of writing and weaving her magic through these mysterious stories. Her research is second to none, and I love how she incorporates locals into her chapters, such as Chris Howley, who lives in Gloucester and supervises late-night vigils at Woodchester Mansion.

My favourite of all the places mentioned in the book is Owlpen Manor in Uley; anywhere with a history of sorcery and poltergeist activity sparks my interest. I also loved reading about the last complete set of early 18th-century painted linen cloths hanging in Britain, forgotten and abandoned.

There is so much to explore in Gloucestershire, and if you enjoy the weird and wonderful side of life, then this is the perfect guide to accompany your trips to the area.

A beautiful book and an excellent addition to the paranormal series.
