What part of the world do you come from?
I am from a town just about an hour north of Los Angeles. I was born in Hollywood, and my family moved to Santa Clarita about two years after that. I love it here, California is about as perfect as it gets, if you ask me
What did you want to be when you grew up?
I pretty much always wanted to be a writer. When I was a little kid, I was always making up worlds and universes, scribbling things on post-it notes and tacking them up around my room. I would draw different creatures and planets on these and my toys would be the characters that inhabited them. I guess this passion for world-building turned into an urge to write, and I wrote a 500-page single-spaced story when I was 13. I have been obsessed with writing ever since then. I also went through phases, in my adult life, where I wanted to be a therapist or a translator, but I always ended up coming back to writing.
List three words to describe yourself.
I would say…quirky, passionate, and sarcastic? Or maybe just two words: HUGE DORK.
Who would play you in a film about your life?
Winona Ryder? Though I hope it would be one of those horrible Robert Zemeckis computer mo-cap renditions of Steve Bushemi. Or just regular Steve Bushemi.
What’s your favourite snack food when writing?
Is wine considered a snack? absolutely, Alex 😉
If you had a super power, what would it be?
Most likely, it would be empathic abilities, but I would really like the ability to be impervious to physical damage or illness. I worry a lot, and that would take my mind off things.
The Sensible Side:
Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a 26-year-old content writer for a web marketing company. Food is essentially my favorite thing in the world. I’m married to a guy who looks like John Lennon. I am obsessed with pugs, and I have two of them—they are named after the demons in Ghostbusters. I speak Japanese, and I’m moving to Japan in July to work as an assistant language teacher. I love to play all sorts of video games, watch scary movies and animated movies, listen to audiobooks, play banjo, travel to far-off lands, study history, daydream, and write, of course. I have written 7 books total, and I hope to write many more in the future.
Where did the inspiration for The Dawn Mirror Chronicles Series come from?
I was in an art history class at the time and we were going over a lot of paintings with angels in them. They were always so interesting to me, being these sublime beings that still looked so emotionally tortured. I think just a lot of those paintings became the springboards for the “what if…” questions that started me writing that series.
What do you like the most about writing Steampunk/Fantasy?
I like it because it allows me to combine a lot of the things I love most. Because steampunk is rooted in the 19th century and fantasy is something of a freeform genre, it kind of lets me create an idealized, whimsical, and simultaneously frightening version of my favorite historical time period.
Your new release, The Hunter’s Bond is a novella (release date 4th June). Do you plan to write more novella’s for this series or return to full-length novels?
This series, the Dawn Mirror Chronicles, has actually been complete since 2012. I’m currently working on editing the final book in the series, Nelvirna Sleeps, which hopefully will be out sometime next year. I had once toyed around with the idea of writing another story that takes place after the last one, but I have so many other things I want to write first that I don’t know if it’ll ever come to fruition.
Can you give us a brief excerpt?
“Boss?” Beatrice called. Creedy caught sight of her and grunted as he tossed a sack of dusty glass bottles into a crate. “I have to know what happened to him.”
“Or what?” he grumbled, wiping his hands on his trousers and turning to face her. “You’ll leave?”
Beatrice refused to be intimidated by him. She willed herself not to blink. “I may not have known him like you did, but he was my friend, too,” she said.
Creedy sighed and turned back to his task. She wasn’t sure whether he was thinking about what to say or ignoring her. At long last, he grumbled out a response without looking at her. “Someone finally got him. I told him it would happen eventually if he kept on acting so bloody reckless. But it couldn’t be helped.” Though he fought to keep his voice hard, it wobbled.
“Got him?” she echoed, her heart leaping. “You mean he was murdered? How?”
“Dangerous line of work. Gets us all, eventually.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Bar-keeping?”
Creedy turned and gave her an exasperated look. “Bounty hunting.”
What can we expect from you in the future?
I am currently editing another manuscript called The Resurrectionist, which is a dark fantasy centered around the West Port murders. It’s about a young surgeon in 19th century London who becomes cursed by the son of the infamous murderer William Hare. In order to save his soul from being consumed, he needs to seek help from witches in the wilds of Scotland. There are revenants and cannibal vampires, and all sorts of weird things in it. I shall definitely be adding that to my must-read pile 😉
I also have another manuscript, called the King of Verdance, which is this fabulously strange book about an indulgent old king whose kingdom gets overtaken. He has to work with his “evil advisor” to save his daughter and stop the usurper from abusing his wish engine, which grants any wish. It’s all done in this sugar-coated 18th century fantasy realm. The sugar coating hides the chewy toxic center.
