My Review:
Robin Hood is one of my favourite legends of all time, and I’ve sat through a million variations of the theme over my many years as a TV and movie lover. At the sprightly age of twelve Richard Carpenter hooked me in with his Robin of Sherwood series, and that was it – an outlaw fan for life!
Having recently visited Dubrovnik in Croatia I got to see first-hand where the latest Robin Hood was filmed and so, for me, it added something a little special to the movie. Although I don’t think Nottingham is ever that sunny in real life!
Taron Egerton can do no wrong in my eyes – I love the guy – and I thought he made a fabulous Robin of Loxley. Jamie Foxx was buff and brilliant as Robin’s Moorish companion, and I liked the chemistry between them. I’m not familiar with Eve Hewson who played Marion, but she did a great job of breathing new and feisty life into a much loved character.
The difference between this version and others we’ve seen is the mix between old and new. It has a dystopian feel to it with the flamboyant outfits of the rich against the gritty characters playing the peasants in the mines. There’s the usual corruption between the Sheriff of Nottingham and the church, as well as the ‘steal from the rich and give to the poor’ theme that we associate with the legend of Robin Hood.
The action is non-stop, and the cinematic delivery is explosive and will appeal to all the thrill seeker movie fans. There’s a revolutionary vibe to this version that I enjoyed.
Set aside all your historical beliefs and that need for authentic costumes and realism and enjoy this for what it is – a brilliant action film about a character we all love.
Highly recommend – I’ll be going back to see it again.

Haha, I can understand that, April. I knew from looking at the exhibit in Croatia that it was a futuristic/fantasy style variation so could detach my mind from reality for a few hours.

I’m inclined to agree with April on this one. I’m still grieving over the end of the very atmospheric Robin of Sherwood series from the 80s! On the other hand, change is good (I suppose) and I’d like to see this new film. I might just love it. Great review, Shelley.

My husband fancies going to see this new film, so we might just do that. Perhaps April was a fan of Michael Praed, too. 😀 But it sounds as though Taron Egerton does a good job, too.
