The Woolly Monkey Mysteries Review

The title caught my eye first. I was browsing the nonfiction section of Netgalley, so what was a title like that doing in this section? Then when I saw the fuzzballs masquerading as monkeys, I knew I wanted to give it a look.

The Woolly Monkey Mysteries isn’t so much about the mysteries themselves as it is the way scientists are trying to find out more about the monkeys. It talks about how hard it is to track this particular species and the camera traps that they’ve resorted to in efforts to learn more.

Kids will be introduced to the idea of a “Keystone species” with emphasis on how important this is. They will also get treated to something that should make them giggle in delight – lots of talk about monkey poop. Even a picture of it!

This is a very clearly-written book with a specific age range in mind. The wording is simple; the information relayed is clear and repetitive when necessary. The book also comes with a couple (wish there were more) QR codes that you can scan and see videos of the monkeys playing and learn a bit more about one of the researchers mentioned in the book. The pictures are about what you’d expect, but the illustrations of the layers of the rainforest were nice.

Overall, a good educational read that reinforces to kids how important preservation is.
