Welcome to the ‘Friday Five Challenge.’
Would you BUY or PASS if you had only a thumbnail image and five minutes to decide?
Welcome to the #FridayFiveChallenge. The original idea comes from Rosie Amber, and you can join up at https://rosieamber.wordpress.com
The rules are laid out at the end of this post if you fancy having a go.
Here is my contribution for this week:
I was in a slight panic about the Friday Five Challenge this week as I’ve spent the last couple of days in bed with a horrible chesty cough, sore throat and high temperature. In my Beechams infused fog I couldn’t think of a single search term! Eventually, I looked up at my noticeboard in a desperate attempt to gather some inspiration and spotted an old quote card. “Take life with a pinch of salt, a slice of fresh lemon and a shot of tequila!” – I used this to dig myself out of the FFC slump and typed ‘Tequila’ into Amazon’s search bar. I found this:
Big Red Tequila by Rick Riordan
When his father was murdered in San Antonio ten years ago, Jackson ‘Tres’ Navarre left town, never to look back. Until now, that is.
Accompanied by his enchilada-eating cat Robert Johnson, tough, no nonsense Tres returns to the city looking for answers and a girl he just couldn’t leave behind. But when she turns out to be missing, Tres goes on the hunt as an unlicensed private investigator to solve both cases, stirring up a Texan hornets’ nest of corruption. And the mob will do anything to silence him.
Slick and spicy with Texan spirit, Big Red Tequila is the first book in the multiple-award-winning suspense series by the internationally bestselling author of the Percy Jackson novels.
Cover – I quite like the rustic feel of this cover, it points me towards a thriller or suspense storyline with an American setting. The US cover is totally different but certainly eye-catching – which one do you prefer?
The book blurb – Love the character name, Jackson ‘Tres’ Navarre, I’m already quite intrigued to find out who he is. Rick Riordan is the best-selling author of the Percy Jackson novels and the Tres Navarre series are his adult mystery novels.
The Stats – The Kindle price is £1.99. There are 16 reviews on Amazon.co.uk, the majority are four and five stars, and 81 reviews on Amazon.com. Here is an example of a four-star review on Amazon.co.uk:
A friend gave me this book as a gift, and I had it hidden away until I recently found it. I’m very glad I did. This book contains interesting characters (you would swear you know some of them), a good plot, a taste of San Antonio, Texas, with a hint of Jimmy Buffett to give it a good flavour. I especially liked the nicknames the lead character gave to strangers. This was a very enjoyable book
BUY or PASS? – I quite like the sound of this. It’s a different genre for me to explore but sounds like a fairly easy read with interesting characters. It’s a BUY from me.
Big Red Tequila – buy your copy.

What is the Friday Five Challenge?
In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions on small postage stamp size book covers (thumbnails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they spend making that buying decision?
AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?
The Challenge is this… IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES…
1) Go to any online book supplier,
2) Randomly choose a category,
3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,
4) Read the book Bio/ Description of this book,
5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,
6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?
(then write a little analysis about your decision)
