Unlimited Update: Cineworld #filmreviews

Film Reviews – My Unlimited Update

One of the best gifts I ever gave myself was to invest in a Cineworld Unlimited Card. I’ve just renewed for my second year and received my shiny black platinum card which I plan to use at every available opportunity.

I’m a huge fan of going to the cinema, not only because some of the movies are spectacular, but also because taking that two hours out is my favourite self-help tool when I’m in need of a break from reality. Escaping into a fictional world for a while calms my nerves, fills my creative well, and recharges my batteries. I often see films on my own if there is nobody around to accompany me, and I’m never the only solo cinemagoer in the room. In fact, at certain showings, the number of people watching on their own outnumber the couples and groups.

By visiting the cinema often, I make good use of my Unlimited membership. I’ve even been known to return and see a specific film four times (The Greatest Showman!!)

Here’s what I’ve watched recently:

The Book Club – 3.5*

Not as rip-roaringly funny as the trailer makes out (why do they always insist on putting the best bits in the trailers and leaving nothing for the film?) but still highly entertaining. Loved the casting. My favourite storyline from the four characters has to be Diane Keaton’s, although Candice Bergen is brilliant too.

Solo: A Star Wars Story – 4*

I’m a huge geek when it comes to Star Wars, so the release date for Solo was written in my diary as soon as I heard about it! I wasn’t disappointed. Full of the usual action, plot twists, and humour that this franchise is well known for. I thought Alden Ehrenreich played a brilliant young Han Solo.

Jurassic World: A Fallen Kingdom – 4*

Here’s another franchise I adore (more so because Chris Pratt is in it!) My favourite film is Jurassic World (2015), and so I had high hopes for this sequel. It was great but not as good as Jurassic World. Chris Pratt returns as Owen and is brought in to help ‘save’ Blue – everyone’s favourite velociraptor. However, the storyline was a bit too similar to The Lost World (1997) where saving the dinosaurs is just a disguise for what’s really happening. Still, loads of action, humour, and incredible special effects, although it was WAY more violent than the other films.

Deadpool 2 – 5*

I didn’t think it would be possible for the sequel to be as funny as the original but OMG it’s brilliant. Ryan Reynolds is fantastic, and Josh Brolin’s character is epic! If you don’t mind your films daft, violent, and crude, then I’d highly recommend this. Laughs from start to finish.

Avengers (Infinity War) – 5*

I am a massive Marvel fan and following the 19 film arc to arrive at this point has been a fabulous journey. My favourite character is Thor (obvs!!), but I have a special place in my heart for every one of the Marvel cast. I can’t give this film a proper review without giving away huge spoilers, but I can say it will delight, entertain, and then rip your heart out of your body. SO MANY EMOTIONS!!! Never before has a superhero movie made me cry but Infinity War is something very special.

Next on the agenda is Ocean’s 8, Adrift, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Mission Impossible so watch this space for the next Unlimited Update.

      1. Well we DO now have a ginormous TV. (We haven’t hooked it up or anything and just use it to watch movies, but we are slowly inching our way into the last century’s technology…)

  1. Totally agree with your The Book Club review… Watched the avengers and was lost through it but then I’m not a marvel fan! I Was forced!!!

  2. I’ve seen most , except for the Book Club, which my husband steadfastly declines to see. Solo was a 3+ for me, Avengers a 4, largely because there were characters i didn’t know. My daughter had to whisper information in my ear. Have yet to see Dead Pool (maybe when I can watch it at home). You have discerning taste, my dear!

    1. Ha ha, thank you, Noelle. I’m hoping to go along and see films that are outside my usual comfort zone – that’s the beauty of having an Unlimited card I guess! Watch this space…

  3. Shelley, you and I are one when it comes to these movies – I’ve seen all except A Fallen Kingdom, and agree with your ratings. You’re right with Book Club – such a fantastic cast, and the writers wasted all that talent.

    1. Thanks, Teri. We clearly found each other on social media because the like-attracts-like vibe was working ha ha. If you don’t know the plot to A Fallen Kingdom then you’ll probably love the new film. I couldn’t stop myself from comparing them.

  4. INteresting – I watch masses of films but have not and probably wouldn’t choose any of these, but often our tastes are so alike! And thanks – this reminds me I haven’t done a TV/film recommend post for months… 🙂

    1. I love your TV/film recommendation posts! I normally share individual film reviews but have been so ridiculously busy lately I’ve had to bunch them together and do micro reviews!!
