My Review:

I read this book during a solo trip in my own camper in the middle of Sherwood Forest, UK, and felt like the author was speaking directly into my soul. Just like Fisher, I am also divorced and pour over the #vanlife images on Pinterest and Instagram – if you know, you know! As I read the book, I was struggling with my own vulnerability, which made this the perfect travelling companion as I didn’t feel entirely so alone.

Unlike the authors, my beautiful camper is fully converted with sink, hob, storage, and a comfy bed. How Fisher managed this trip before her van conversion, I’ll never know. I’m in awe of her dedication.

The author takes her reader on a physical journey as she navigates across 20 states and an emotional one. When she cried, I cried. I felt every emotion, fear, and excitement.

I live in England, so it was fascinating to see how different the US campsites and regulations differ from the rules and etiquette we have over here. I might have talked myself out of the entire trip if I’d had to wait for plates for my camper! The bear boxes would also freak me out a little. However, I could relate to that sense of freedom when driving on the open road and admiring the glorious views from a lakeside pitch.

Fisher bares her soul in this book. She talks openly about her divorce and the resulting anxieties, fears, and emotions of breaking up a home. Once on the road, she talks honestly about her worries and excitement of solo travelling for more than 10,000 miles. Her journey took her from Seattle to Florida, and I loved the descriptions and ‘travel guide’ paragraphs from the places she stopped along the route.

Part memoir, part self-help, and part travel guide Go: One Woman. One Van. A New Beginning is a wonderful story of loss, adventure, courage, grief, and acceptance.

A great book told from the heart, well written, and powerful. I would highly recommend if you enjoy true stories with a dash of personal development or if you’ve ever wondered what van life is truly like!
